The Word

I Samuel 30: 1-6

1 NOW WHEN David and his men came home to Ziklag on the third day, they found that the Amalekites had made a raid on the South (the Negeb) and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 And had taken the women and all who were there, both great and small, captive. They killed no one, but carried them off and went on their way. 3 So David and his men came to the town, and behold, it was burned, and their wives and sons and daughters were taken captive. 4 Then David and the men with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. 5 David’s two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. 6 David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

The Message

Life for me has been tough in the last few months. I understand that life has challenges but I have had more than my fair share in recent times. I prayed, spoke the Word, bit it felt like I was going uphill. My circumstances were challenging my entire walk of faith. It felt like it was a waste of my entire life. It appeared that my life of faith was a huge lie. I was extremely discouraged, but I knew something had to snap when my blood pressure began to act funny. Discouragement

Luckily, I have been in a church where the Word has been preached for this season of my life. That helped. But I needed to get hold of myself and focus on God. Then I remembered today’s text. Before David became king. The Philistines came and invaded his space, took everything-even his wives and children. Not just his, but all his men lost everything. They all turned on him and began to curse, threatening him with death. They all lost it. What did he do, He began to encourage himself in the Lord, his God.

Like David, I began to encourage myself in the Lord, my God. This was just a personal experience but I got to church and the Pastor also shared from this text, so I decided to share. I realized I am not alone; it appears there has been a satanic onslaught on believers. There is the need for loads and loads of encouragement.

All the things going on around our nation and the world at large have a way of landing at our door steps. People die, businesses struggle, uncertainty looms. They affect us one way or the other. Dr Ameyo Adadevoh died. She had to pay the ultimate price. She is someone’s wife, mother, and daughter. She has friends and loved ones who are grieving in these times. I don’t know her, but I have close friends who are still in shock because she was close to them, a vital part of their lives. The truth is that with all the negativity around us we must take responsibility to encourage ourselves for life.

The big question I asked myself, is who is this God that we must encourage ourselves in? For a moment, I had to remind myself what I know about Him, what He has been to me over the years. God is the creator of the heavens and earth but He is also our loving heavenly Father. He is just, true and holy. He is full of mercy. He is true to His word. He has good thoughts towards us. He has the ability to bring those thoughts to pass. He will not give us scorpions when we ask for bread. He watches the sparrow so He will watch over me. He does not sleep or slumber. His eyes are continuously watching over me. That is the God we are in covenant with. We can find encouragement in who He is, what He has done in our lives and what He is yet capable of doing.

It is one thing to remember who He is but another to remember who we are in Him. We are so discouraged we cannot see beyond our frustrations. Our heads hang low and we are not walking as tall as we should. We have forgotten who we are in Him. We can understand who he is but forget what He has made us.

I had to remind myself and just to remind you; you are a victor not a victim. You are more than a conqueror. In Him you live, move and have your being. You have His DNA, created in His image to subdue and dominate your world, so you cannot fail. You are preserved, protected and watched over night and day. No harm gets to you without getting His permission.

The enemy of your soul is trying to make you feel otherwise but that is who you are In Him.  If you just lost your job, or the doctor just made a negative pronouncement about your health, or your business just collapsed or someone you love just died from Ebola or a bomb, you may not feel like this is who you are but none of those circumstances change who you are. You must stay close to who you are in Him. He will infuse you with the strength you need at this time. Victory does not come without a fight. These times give us the perfect platform to fight. Please encouraged in who you are in Him. That can never change.

What am I trying to say? In every cloud, there is a silver lining. For the believer, this is actually our finest hour. In all the catastrophe going on around us, there are opportunities. But we must have the winning spirit, the encouraged mind set to see them and take maximum advantage of them. What is the posture you should adopt to encourage yourself for life? You must understand that there is a high call of God on your life. You have been equipped to fulfill that call. The attitude is to press into that high call. Constantly remind yourself that there is a heavenly mandate on your life. Pressing means to be persistent, to keep pushing for more, to never give up. Remember life is not necessarily going to get better, ( we are in the end times), so the only way to go is to keep pressing.

In our text, because David was encouraged, he was able to get counsel form the Lord that reversed the circumstance. He was able to recover everything. We need the encouragement to get our divine strategies to win in life. That is why the enemy does not relent in His discouragement strategies. He understands exactly how it works. As long as we focus on the issues, we cannot get the solutions we need.

So here I am today, sharing my experience and all fired up and pressing in to the high call of God on my life. I don’t care how many bombs go off. I don’t care how close Ebola comes to me, I don’t care if the entire world collapses around me, I look up and press in. It has kept me, it will keep you. God never fails. Ck
