Incubating in the Lord
Genesis 1: 1-3
1 In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
The life of a believer is full of times and seasons. People tend to talk about the good and bad seasons, but there are others that don’t fall into either category. I happen to be in one such season at the moment.
The events of my life in the last few months have made it obvious to me that God deals with us in many ways. Just when you feel like you understand what He is doing, He releases another joker and throws you completely off your feet. He operates in many ways.
How do we keep up with Him? How do we know what he is about to do next in our lives? In recent times, I have had a deep knowing that God wants to do some unusual stuff in my life, but have no clue as to what it is. As I was talking to Him about it, He said to me, He needed to incubate with me. That is a new vocabulary between Him and me.
What is incubation? What did He mean? There are times in the life of a believer when God wants to give you instructions, understanding about situations in your life or direction in particular situations. He wants to breathe into you. He needs you to be quiet and undistracted for Him to really commune with you. Usually it is because He wants to do something new in your life. He wants to give fresh counsel.
I have been writing about seasons of blessings. I am beginning to realize that it requires a lot more than confession to get into the place where God want us to be. You cannot get there without confession but there are other variables, one of which is what the Lord is calling Incubation with Him. It is a period in our lives when we spend time with the Lord to get specific instructions from Him. One clearly understood and obeyed instruction from the Lord can change the whole course of our lives. And the Lord desires that we allow Him to take us through such times.
When the Bible opens up in Genesis, there is crippling darkness upon the earth. It was frozen and dark. Then the Spirit of God moved upon the earth, like the mother hen does over her eggs before they hatch. The hen provides warmth and that gives the energy required for the chicks to hatch and come forth. In the same way, when we don’t have clear thoughts as to how to go about a matter or we don’t even know what next we are to do, we are like the earth was before God spoke-in darkness. We need enlightenment, illumination. We need understanding. We need direction. We need a clear word from God.
At such times, spending time in worship, reading the word, and being alone with Him. The difference between this and the other times you spend with Him is that He initiates it. He tells you, I want to spend time with you. That is why it is called Incubation-He is imparting something specific to you for a specific purpose or assignment. You come out of this period with a sure word to work with.
The last time I knew He wanted to speak to me like that was in 2007. I was away on holiday for one whole month. I have not had that kind of blissful retreat from home since then. It was after I had to shut down my business and did not know what next to do. I felt battered and very disappointed. I was afraid to do any other thing. That was when He spoke to me about my radio program, Dove Eyes. He convinced me to do it and gave me the format, told me how to go about it. The program started six months later.
I am about to get another such instruction. I just felt a need to share this with you because I know I am not alone in this journey. He is drawing people out to give them counsel for the next level. See this devotional as a call to you and respond. You don’t have to stop work or your normal schedule, just be more sensitive to His presence and be quieter- especially in your spirit.
When the Lord spoke and said, ‘Let there be light’, the earth became enlightened. Darkness was gone. And the earth God planned came into being. In the same way, the word He speaks to you will bring for the light you need for the season to prosper in it.
I truly believe God is in the business of blessing His people. But there is a process. True blessings from God come with a process which is governed by faith. That is why it takes time, but it does not fail if we subject ourselves to it. I have come thus far, and will partake of that which He has in store for me. I don’t know about you, but I must run my race to win the prize. I am sure you feel the same way. Ck
