The Word

Isaiah 52:1-4

1 AWAKE, AWAKE, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean. [Rev. 21:27.]deliver

2 Shake yourself from the dust; arise, sit [erect in a dignified place], O Jerusalem; loose yourself from the bonds of your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion.

3 For thus says the Lord: You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.

4 For thus says the Lord God: My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there; and [many years later Sennacherib] the Assyrian oppressed them for nothing. [Now I delivered you from both Egypt and Assyria; what then can prevent Me from delivering you from Babylon?]

The Message

I don’t think I am the only Nigerian born again Christian who has the holy fury of God burning inside them in this season. It appears we are under siege. I feel that way not just on our National front but even in m personal life. It appears the enemy has unleashed his entire arsenal to weaken us as a nation and even in our individual lives.

Just this morning, I received a ‘breaking news alert’ of bomb threats in Lagos and Port Harcourt. I do not know if these threats are real, but I know that if they could do what they have done in the Northern part of Nigeria in the most recent past, then they could very well be planning something for these two cites.

But this morning, just before the alert came in, I was in prayer when I remembered the today’s text. I read it yesterday morning in what appears to be the first time. I have read the Bible several times but I have never seen this verse. But it brought so much comfort and confidence to me. I was praying about Nigeria when I was reminded of it.

You know, it was the power of recall that gave David the boldness to take Goliath on without what was known as armour at the time. He took him on with five stones and a sling. He recalled that the Lord has delivered him from the lion and the bear and was confident that He would deliver him once again. He took his one and only shot, and that brought Goliath down. The rest is history.

In today’s text, Israel was in captivity. It appeared that Babylon would swallow up the name of Israel. It looked like God was nowhere in sight. God reminded them of how he delivered them from Egypt and then Assyria and asked a rhetorical question. Who could stop Him from delivering them from Babylon? The question was unanswered. It does not need an answer.

As I prayed, I recalled how the Lord delivered Nigeria from colonial masters. It was a long arduous battle. It took events like the Aba Women’s Riot of 1929 where ‘Thousands of Igbo women organized a massive revolt against the policies imposed by British colonial administrators in south eastern Nigeria, touching off the most serious challenge to British rule in the history of the colony.  The “Women’s War” took months for the government to suppress and became a historic example of feminist and anti-colonial protest’ – Marissa K Evans.

We know of men like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and others who took the British Colonial powers on in their day and eventually got us independence in 1960. Who made it happen?

I recall the Biafran war that would have divided us as a nation. Nigeria lost lots of young men who went to war. The Eastern Region was impoverished through loss of vibrant young energy and property. The war came to an end in 1970 with a declaration of ‘no victor no vanquished’. Who did it?

Then we had military rule for so long. It became our way of governance, even though we did not favour it. It transited from military rule to military dictatorship where Nigerians lived in fear. One such dictator simply ‘ate an apple’ while the other ‘stepped aside’ and we got the chance to put our democracy together. Who did it?

When others tried to tamper with the democracy by introducing the 3rd term agenda, what happened?  That was also squashed. Who did it?

Today we face yet another enemy of national progress. I have not been able to decipher if it is a political or spiritual enemy. All I know is that he threatens the peace, unity and sovereignty of our nation and so he is an enemy, like all the others.

So I enter into the power of recall, that the One who did all the others will do this one as well. Like David, our weapons will not be carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.  He will bring this one down. However we must position ourselves for the battle. Then He will give the victory.

I see this, not only on a national front, but also in my personal life. I know I have enemy action going on in our lives, trying to scare us and make us shake in the knees. However, I enter into the power of recall and remember His Ebenezers of old. Did He not save us from the pits of hell and make us His own? Has he not delivered us from several lions and bears in our lives, marriage, our children, our health, our needs, our jobs, businesses etc? Has He not proved Himself over and over again? Will He not do it again?

When He referred to Egypt, I remembered the plagues, the death of all first born sons, the drowning of the Egyptian choice army in the Red Sea. Egypt never survived that onslaught. Then I recalled Sennecharib, king of Assyria who threatened brimstone and fire. He spoke pompous words and it looked like all was over. It took one angel to slay 185,000 soldiers.  His own son killed Him. God did not need to go far. And it was all over.

What is the enemy doing in your space? Think back. Get into the power of recall. It will build the faith you need for God to step in once again to prove Himself faithful to you. Our God is faithful. He will deliver continually. It is just the way He is.

Just enter the power of recall. Remember. Don’t forget. Continue to remind yourself. He is the same. He will not change. Position yourself for the miracle. It will happen shortly. Trust Him. He is faithful.  He remains the same. He cannot change now. It is not in His nature.
